Law

Josh Rigsby, second year

Josh came to Birmingham Newman for a law degree where the seminar is a conversation, not a queue for the microphone. He spends Thursday afternoons in mooting practice and Friday mornings in the library pods overlooking the reservoir. “People use your name,” he says. “That changes how brave you are with a wrong answer.”

Psychology

Alicia, first year

Alicia is the first in her family to enrol. The Student Success Team booked her a study-skills hour in week two, before the first lab report. She eats in Bistro 32 between lectures and uses the multi-faith room when the week feels loud. Her advice to applicants is simple: visit, and stay for a coffee in the Atrium.

Lucy

Lucy wanted both the science of behaviour and a clear route into justice work. Placement conversations take her into the city, then back to a campus that is quiet enough to write. She rates the 24-hour IT suite for the nights when a draft will not wait until morning.

A brand that still looks forward

The university marked half a century by drawing its public mark from the coat of arms: the crosses of St Chad, a flame of learning, and a wolf that faces forward rather than back. The campus you walk today still teaches that idea in ordinary ways, from chaplaincy soup lunches to world-leading work in education and history.
