Birmingham Newman

Research with a public purpose

In REF 2021 Birmingham Newman University more than doubled its staff submission compared with its 2014 debut. Every submitted subject area was recognised for a high proportion of internationally significant work.

World-leading pockets of work

Five disciplines achieved the highest accolade of world-leading quality: Education, History, Sport, Social Work and Social Policy, and English. Undergraduates are taught by research-active staff, so new knowledge reaches the classroom rather than staying in a separate building.

The research strategy prioritises mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration and work that contributes to society, from emerging doctoral scholars to established academics. The approved Code of Practice for REF 2029 sets out how that culture will be evidenced next.

Education

Safeguarding, attachment, trauma and mental health, and higher education practice.

Health and sport

Public health, nursing scholarship and sport science connected to community programmes.

Humanities

History and English research that keeps a scholarly conversation open to undergraduates.
